E-cigarette flavors and usage habits: what emerges from Italian user data

Flavors play a central role in the experience of adults who use e-cigarettes. The national survey conducted by Euromedia Research for ANAFE specifically analyzed the motivations for use, overall satisfaction, and the types of flavors preferred by users.

The results show a complex picture: non-tobacco flavors are chosen with significant frequency, accompanied by a generally high level of satisfaction and strong continuity of use over time. These trends emerge across the board among the adult vapers surveyed, who identify their preferred flavor as a relevant component of product enjoyment.

In this article, we analyze the data with a neutral and informative approach, to better understand how flavors influence the user experience and what elements emerge in terms of perception, habits, and declared behaviors.

Preferred flavors and tastes: fruity notes prevail

The survey shows that among adults who use e-cigarettes, fruity flavors are among the most chosen, followed by tobacco flavors. At a lesser distance appear other aromatic profiles (such as sweet or spicy tastes), chosen by a portion of the sample that declares more specific preferences.

This distribution confirms that, for a significant portion of users, the flavor experience represents a distinguishing factor, often also associated with personalization of use.

Choices consistent with vapers' history

Among former smokers, tobacco flavors remain present but do not constitute the majority. Many users declare they opt for alternative tastes, especially fruit, further proving that preferences evolve over time and follow personal criteria, mainly linked to individual satisfaction.

Usage satisfaction: over 8 out of 10 users report a positive opinion

The survey finds a generally high level of satisfaction: over 80% of adults who use e-cigarettes describe themselves as “very” or “fairly” satisfied with their experience.

This finding is also confirmed by retrospective judgment: if they could go back, over 9 out of 10 users declare they would choose e-cigarettes again.

Factors influencing satisfaction

Among the most cited reasons in the adult vaper sample:
• subjective preference for a specific flavor,
• consistency between chosen taste and personal expectation,
• personalization of the usage experience.

The flavored element is therefore perceived as an integral part of one’s daily habit.

Continuity of use: over a third report long-term prospects

According to the data collected, more than a third of adults who use e-cigarettes declare their intention to continue using them over time. This finding fits within a framework of stability and consolidation of habits, with very high satisfaction rates.

Continuity, however, is not linked to a single factor: respondents link it to a combination of chosen taste, personal nicotine management, practicality of use, and overall product perception.

Statements and context

It is essential to remember that these elements derive from user self-declarations and fall within the scope of subjective interpretations of the surveyed sample.

Perceptions on flavors: differences between users and the general population

The data shows how users attribute greater importance to flavors compared to the general population, which tends to consider them less relevant. The gap between internal (vaper) and external (non-user) perception confirms how much direct experience affects the formation of a more nuanced judgment.

Interpretations of the phenomenon

The preference for a specific flavor is linked to strictly individual motivations:
• taste balance,
• perceived sensation during use,
• familiarity with the aromatic profile.

These are choices that do not follow common logic but vary based on personal experience and sensitivity.

Regulatory framework: flavors, labeling, and compliance

In the European Union, e-cigarettes fall within the regulatory framework defined by the Tobacco Products Directive (TPD). In terms of flavors, the regulation establishes:
• mandatory labeling criteria,
• requirements on the composition of inhalation liquids,
• compliance obligations for products placed on the market.

In Italy, national legislation transposes these obligations by defining limits, control requirements, and notification obligations to competent authorities.

The presence of flavors in e-cigarette liquids therefore complies with precise regulatory standards, aimed at ensuring transparency for adult consumers and correct procedures for authorized distributors.

Flavors and declared behaviors: evolution over time

One of the most interesting aspects of the survey concerns the ability of flavor preferences to change over time among the same users. Many vapers declare having modified their preferences, switching from tobacco to fruity flavors (or vice versa), or experimenting with new tastes over time.

This element suggests that flavors are part of a dynamic experience, with choices that adapt to the individual journey and usage habits.

Conclusions

Flavors represent a significant element in the experience of adults who use e-cigarettes in Italy. The preference for fruity tastes, the generally high level of satisfaction, and the declared continuity of use outline a stable and coherent picture, in which the aromatic component becomes a subjective and identity factor.

At the same time, European and national legislation assigns these products a clear, regulated, and defined perimeter, contributing to distinguishing authorized channels and correct market placement procedures.

As in the first article, these elements also underscore the importance of informative, neutral, and regulated communication, useful for guiding adult consumers, operators, and decision-makers within a constantly evolving sector.
